Stomach bloating pain and cramps could be reduced by drinking mint tea.

The “marvellous” tea was described as a bloat reducer by nutritionist Maeve Madden.

“Mint contains a compound called menthol that aids in the normalisation of intestinal contractions,” she said in her book ‘Beat Your Bloat’.

“This is the perfect home remedy for anyone suffering with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

“The natural oils found in mint help to break down and remove gas from the digestive tract.”

Healthline, a US-based medical website, said mint teas containing peppermint could help reduce stomach bloating symptoms.

“Peppermint is an herb often used to relieve digestive issues, including IBS.

“Drinking peppermint tea soothes the intestines, relieves abdominal pan, and reduces bloating.

“One study found that peppermint also relaxed gastrointestinal tissue in animal models. However, more studies are needed in humans.

“You can add a drop of pure peppermint essential oil into a cup of herbal tea or a cup of hot water. You can also make tea using bagged or loose peppermint tea.

A 2011 study found peppermint tea can activate an anti-pain channel in the colon, according to health website Everyday Health.

“This channel, called TRPM8, may reduce the pain linked to eating some spicy foods like mustard or chilli.

“Since then, multiple studies have confirmed peppermint oil to be a beneficial treatment for IBS.”

They advised steering clear of the mint product peppermint candy to soothe stomach bloating pain, as it can contribute to heartburn.

“If you have heartburn it’s probably best to steer clear of mint-flavoured products to avoid the irritation that can come along with it.”

Some exercises can also help reduce stomach bloating.

But patients could relieve their bloating pain by doing this quick yoga pose, it’s been claimed.

The ‘cat cow’ pose aims to get rid of IBS symptoms and trapped gas, according to nutritionist Maeve Madden.

The best time to do the yoga pose is just before bed, she said.

Patients could also prevent the condition from coming back by making sure they eat meals during daylight hours.
