Acid Reflux damage may not be caused by stomach acid. It has always been thought that in a case of acid reflux, the stomach acid was responsible for the damage in the esophagus. Therefore it was treated by acid-suppressing medications. However, a recent study has shown that esophagus damage can be the result of inflammation caused by proteins called cytokines. This study can be a game changer for acid reflux treatment.

Medication for acid reflux can affect chronic pain management drugs. Chronic pain management is usually treated via painkillers, which can cause addiction. Also, the treatment might interact with other medications. For example, proton-pump inhibitors, for acid reflux treatment, limit the absorption of proteins, which affect the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter related to low pain tolerance. Fortunately, there are also natural ways to take care of chronic pain.

Minor acid reflux cases not requiring prescription drugs. Heartburn is usually treated with PPIs (proton-pump inhibitors). There are cases in which people take these drugs for years, for chronic acid reflux cases. However, in the case of a minor heartburn, OTC antacid medicines will be enough, such as Tums or Rolaids.
