Vinegar for Heartburn

Vinegar for Heartburn

Heartburn is a common occurrence among a large population within the United States and for many the problem becomes quite serious and debilitating. When heartburn starts, most grab the chalky wafer antacids to suck on or those convenient over-the-counter heartburn blocker pills to distinguish the fire. For others, a holistic or more natural approach is desired to relieve heartburn symptoms so a little research might lead them to a remedy like vinegar for heartburn. It sounds odd that something like vinegar would be an aide in relieving the over-production of acid. How does one acid compound compiled with another acid compound cancel each other out?

Approximately there are 1 in 10 U.S. citizens who suffer from acid reflux or heartburn symptoms on a daily basis. When we eat, our body produces an acid enzyme to break down the food so it can be digested and carried out of the body as waste. When too much acid is produced and released into the stomach, it can seep into the lower esophageal sphincter causing a burning sensation as it backs up into the esophagus. If heartburn symptoms persist or progress over time, that acid can cause damage to a person’s tissues and organs requiring a much more invasive treatment plan in order to repair and prevent further damage from acid.

A lot of times, it’s the food we are eating or our lifestyle that is causing an overproduction of acid and when eaten in abundance or on a regular basis, the symptoms of heartburn can become a regular occurrence. Some causes of heartburn may include: citrus fruits, coffee, spicy foods, chocolate and even smoking.

Many believe that heartburn occurs because too little acid is produced in the stomach and our bodies are unable to breakdown the food as it passes through. When this happens, the pressure that ensues from the stomach becomes too much for the LES valve causing the acid to seep into the esophagus. When vinegar is introduced into the system, it actually calms the muscles of the LES allowing it to stabilize and release just enough acid to complete the process of digestion. Some believe that a dose of vinegar in water should only be accompanied by the onset of heartburn symptoms while other think that drinking the vinegar concoction on a regular basis will aid in the body producing more natural stomach acids although there have been very few studies suggesting that any use of vinegar for heartburn is beneficial.

If you are so inclined to taking vinegar for your heartburn symptoms, it’s best to err on the side of conservativeness by thinking in smaller amounts. Generally, it is suggested that a dose of vinegar consists of adding 1 tablespoon of vinegar (apple cider vinegar is prescribed as it has a lower acidic value) stirred into 8 oz. of water is sufficient to aide in relieving heartburn symptoms. Too much vinegar could actually exacerbate acid production causing the worsening of heartburn.
